Three Months of Thursdays
I work in a restaurant kitchen. The shifts are hard and heavy but I love it. Best of all, I never have to take any of my work home, unless it's delicious leftovers.
Before I cooked for a living, I wrote—for newspapers and radio and animated programs.
Even though it wasn't my profession anymore, I still wanted to write. I had the time, the mental bandwidth, and most importantly, creative ideas that I cared deeply about. But it turned out writing in the absence of assignments, editors and deadlines is a whole different ball game. Companioned only by my ego and my inner critic, writing became a slow and torturous trial, and it showed on the page.
When I stumbled into The Divine Office, I just wanted to get out of my house and into a space that is free from distractions. But it was the prayers, the companionship, and the atmosphere of spiritual alignment with work that truly acted like a balm on my heart.
I finished my first screenplay in about three months of Thursdays at The Divine Office. Most importantly, I did it without any inner anxiety or turmoil. I feel like I regained my identity as a writer.
Along the way I have made so many friends. Although we all work on different projects, there is somehow a collaborative spirit of support. We share our struggles and celebrate each other's successes. I think we have a lot of fun here, and we get a lot done, because work always feels lighter when it's connected with faith, community, and purpose.
